Protecting Yourself and Your Family
There are many ways that we all can protect ourselves and our families from the danger that mosquitoes and their ability to carry disease pose. The following is a list of precautions we all can take to protect ourselves and our families. Please note that when using things such as: mosquito repellents, home use foggers, and home use mosquito chemicals be sure to read and follow all manufacturer's guidelines and instructions.
Mosquito repellents are a good method for protecting yourself from mosquitoes and some other nasty creatures like ticks and chiggers.
Generally for mosquitoes repellents containing the active ingredient Deet work the best, although care should be applied when using a repellent with Deet for kids. As with any chemical read the manufactures instructions and follow them. For more information regarding the use of mosquito repellents check out this very informative article from the CDC.
Home use foggers are another method that you public can employ to protect yourselves and your family from mosquitoes. They can be fairly effective at controlling the mosquitoes around your home, and often come with pre-mixed ready to use chemical. They can be found usually at your local hardware store or home improvement center. Be careful when using these foggers if you have any ornamental pond fish. Some of the chemicals used for mosquito control can be deadly to fish when applied in sufficient amounts, so be sure to check the label of the chemical your using. Also unlike the person in this picture you should always wear an appropriate respirator (a dust mask is not a respirator! ) when using a fogger.
Replace broken screens and all other possible entry points that mosquitoes could use to enter your home. One favorite entry point for hungry mosquitoes ( especially in areas of low income housing ) is improper sealing around window air conditioner units. The Southern House Mosquito is so named because of its ability to find its way into the home and feed at night, and it is not the only species that will take up residence in the home if given the chance.
Installing "bug" light bulbs into your outside light fixtures could reduce the amount of mosquitoes that are attracted to your house. Having outside security, porch, or carport lights on at night could be attracting a huge amount of mosquitoes and other insects to your home. Manufactures claim that the yellow coating on a "bug" bulb makes the light "invisible" to insects. Whether this is true or not I don't know but they do seem to work fairly well at cutting down on the number insects that show up to your outside lights.
Lets not forget about another important part of the family that can benefit from our diligence to eliminate mosquito breeding around the home, our pet. Dog Heartworm is a major threat to our pets especially if they live outdoors. The Asian Tiger and the Southern House Mosquito are excellent vectors of Dog Heartworm in Louisiana. Talk with your veterinarian to be sure that your pet is properly protected from mosquito-transmitted diseases. For more information check out these informative links. Wearing long clothes whenever possible is a great way to reduce your chances of getting bit by mosquitoes. For a extra layer of protection use mosquito repellent on top of wearing long clothes, this has the added bonus of not exposing your skin to the ingredients in repellents such as Deet. Now the person in this picture may be going just a little to far, but I guess that depends on where you happen to live in Louisiana.
Home use mosquito chemicals can be another way that you the public can use to control mosquitoes around your home. They come in many different shapes and sizes and are usually readily available at your local hardware store or home improvement center. They can be great at controlling mosquito breeding especially in cases where a homeowner may have areas of standing water on their property. As with all chemicals be sure to read and follow all manufacturers labels and instructions.
It cant be said enough, the front line of defense for you and your family against mosquitoes is eliminating all potential breeding places around the home. Just remember if it can hold rainwater then it can and probably is breeding mosquitoes. Empty those containers and serve your uninvited guest the mosquito an eviction notice today!
